MEMORY VERSE: ďFor God is spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.Ē (John 4:24)
I. QUESTION: WHAT IS WORSHIP?
ANSWER: Worship is praising and giving honor to God, both for what he has done for us, and simply because of who he is. Worship is expressing our love for God.
II. QUESTION: WHY MUST WE WORSHIP?
ANSWER: We must worship because:
1. God is worthy of worship.
2. God has done great things for us.
3. God, our great King, is enthroned in our worship. (Psalm 22:3; 145:1)
III. QUESTION: HOW ARE WE TO WORSHIP?
ANSWER: We worship God by proclaiming the glory of his name, by singing of Godís worthiness and the great things he has done, by reading the Word of God, and by giving to God. (Hebrews 13:15; Revelation 5:1-14; Nehemiah 8:1; Proverbs 3:9,10; Deuteronomy 16:16-17; Leviticus 19:24)
IV. QUESTION: ARE WE ALLOWED TO USE AN IDOL OR IMAGE IN WORSHIP?
ANSWER: God most strictly forbids every making or bowing down to an idol. Idols are merely statues shaped by human hands, they have no power or life. God, however, is living. He cannot be represented by an idol. (Exodus 20:4-5; Psalm 115:4-8; Acts 17:29)
God is spirit. He is not a physical form. Therefore, he cannot be represented by a physical idol. He must be worshipped in spirit and in truth. (John 4:23-24)
V. QUESTION: ARE WE ALLOWED TO WORSHIP ANYONE ELSE BESIDE GOD?
ANSWER: God explicitly command his people to worship no other gods. When Satan tries to get Jesus to bow down to him, Jesus quotes this to him. We are to worship God and God ONLY. (Exodus 20:3; Matthew 4:10)
VI. QUESTION: WHEN YOU DONíT WORSHIP YOUR ANCESTORS DO YOU FORSAKE THEM?
ANSWER: The Bible commands us to honor our parents and to obey our parents. If we believe in Jesus, we must obey our parents. (Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:1-2) However, after someone had died, the Bible says those who die will not come back, they are gone forever. After a person dies, there is nothing that we can do on the earth to help that person. They are gone from this world and its influence forever. That means that if we donít worshipping them, we are not forsaking them, because they were not really benefiting from the worship at all. We are to worship God alone. (Job 7:9)
VII. QUESTION: HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THE OLD WORHSIP OF YOUR OLD LIFE?
ANSWER: You must completely destroy any idols that you have worshipped. You cannot take any part in worshipping idols anymore, because that will become a trap for you. You will become caught up in it, and turn away from God. Your must remove anything that is idolatrous from your home. Even though idols are not really true gods, worship offered to idols is offered to demons, evil spirits. Those evil spirits can seize control of a person if the person is not careful. IDOLATRY IS NOT SOMETHING TO BE PLAYED WITH! IT IS DANGEROUS BUSINESS! (Deuteronomy 7:25-26; 1 Corinthians 10:19-20)
